We at Leisure Properties would like to thank you for visiting our office at 2447 GA Hwy. 300 South at Smoak Bridge. We would also like to share a brief synopsis of our beautiful Lake Blackshear.
Lake Blackshear is approximately an 8,000 acre lake located approximately 10 miles west of Cordele, GA. The lake was created in 1930 when the Flint River was dammed up as a primary hydro electrical source. The Crisp County Power Commission and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources monitor the lake. Crisp County Power Commission operates many boat ramps, parking areas, and regulates dock, boathouse, and seawall permits, with the Department of Natural Resources monitoring the lake for public safety and health hazards, and stocking the lake with a wide variety of fish including several species of bass, perch, crappie, and catfish.
In the mid 1980's The Lake Blackshear Watershed Association was formed by concerned members of the Crisp County Power Commission, industries, and some concerned lake residents to study and monitor water condition and quality of the lake. The Lake Blackshear Home Owners' Association was formed in the late 90's to monitor needs and to address the concerns of the Lake Blackshear home owners. Both of these associations are very active in our lake area and would like to invite any lake resident participation. You may contact our office for further information.
Since the creation of the lake, Lake Blackshear has become the most popular recreational and fishing lake in Southwest Georgia. Along its banks are many lovely homes, both full-time and weekend. Weekend and resident skiers and boaters turn its water and fisherman fish the backwaters among the picture-perfect moss draped trees. Lake Blackshear offers the best of both worlds, recreational and fishing activities, creating the feeling "of being on vacation year around". In the early 1970's the area south of the 280 Bridge was cleared of most of the stumps and debris allowing for the recreational use of this area of the lake while maintaining the north end of the lake as a natural habitat for wildlife and fishing.
One of the most desirable factors of the lake is the approximately 1300 acre Georgia Veterans Memorial State Park which is located about halfway between the dam and the back waters of the Flint River. This most frequently visited State Park features an 18 hole golf course, overnight lodging, cabins, restaurant, conference center, swimming pool, beach & nature trails, historical museum and an excursion train ride to historical sites such as "Jimmy Carter Country" in Plains and other stops along the way.
To complete your lake experience our great area offers the comfort and covenience of fine dining, great churces, nearby shopping, and historical sites. We would like to invite you to become part of this fast growing resort area and to experience the greatest and the warmest feature of all, "The wonderful Lake Blackshear residents and community"!!
